A Day in Newington, New Hampshire: What To See, Eat, and Do

This historic New Hampshire town gives a whole new meaning to the word quaint, with a population of only 753 people today. Home to the Portsmouth International Airport and New Hampshire National Guard, Newington is certainly a town that’s been put on the map in the last 100-years. Additionally, as a city escape just one-hour outside of Boston, Newington is becoming an increasingly popular stay-cation destination for travelers everywhere.

If you’re thinking of adventuring around Newington in the coming weeks or months, check out our crash guide below:

Where To Go

  1. Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge: Established in 1992, the Great bay National Wildlife Refuge plays an important role in the migration and wintering habitat for the bald eagle. It’s also a common location to see the peregrine falcon, the pied-billed grebe, osprey, common tern, and upland sandpiper. Filled with plenty of hiking pathways and trails, it’s a great afternoon destination for those desiring to see Mother Nature more closely.
  2. The Mall at Fox Run: If you’re looking to get some shopping in while exploring Newington, then the Mall at Fox Run is the place to go. A one-level enclosed regional shopping mall just outside of Portsmouth, there are plenty of shopping and eating options available – even despite COVID-19.

Additional Mentions:

  • The Crossings
  • Newington Historical Marker
  • Newington Old Town Hall
  • Raider Laser
  • Regal Fox Run Stadium 15
  • Glowgolf
  • Cyntillation Aquatics

Where To Eat

  1. Stoneface Brewing: Having brewed beer since 2014, the Stoneface Brewing company creates IPAs and pales, interesting lagers, delicious dark ales, and an increasing amount of sour ales today. With 12 taps available at their tasting room, Stoneface Brewing now provides their products around New England – you may have tasted one already! Stop by for both indoor and outdoor seating, with an adorable white tent outside laden in string lights.
  2. Newick’s Lobster House: If you’re looking to get your hands on some fresh New England seafood, then Newick’s Lobster House is the place to go. The laid-back dining atmosphere serves patrons stacks of seafood on Styrofoam plates, seated at red-and-white checkered picnic tables. Get the steamed lobster dinner, or of course, the New England clam chowder while visiting.
  3. Texas Roadhouse: Lastly, we can’t forget to mention a fan favorite of Texas Roadhouse! Located just 0.2 miles from the Mall at Fox Run, the Texas Roadhouse is a great place to bring the whole family while you enjoy authentic barbeque cuisine.

Newington is a great place to spend an evening or an afternoon if you’re looking to experience the slower side of the Northeast. The up-and-coming region will surely treat you to a fun travel experience in the future. Check it out today!

A Day in Nashua, New Hampshire: What To See, Eat, and Do

Nestled along the Nashua River with plenty of access to Mother Nature is a New Hampshire gem known as Nashua. Conveniently only 35-miles from Boston, this eclectic New England city has become a hot-spot for individuals looking to escape into the quieter part of the Northeast.

With Greeley Park featuring plenty of picnic areas and playgrounds, as well as the central home to the Symphony NH that performs orchestral works at various venues, Nashua has plenty to do and see for anyone passing through.

So, what should you do with a day or two in the “charming gate city” of New Hampshire? We’ve got you covered.

Where To Go

  1. Mine Falls Park: The 325-acre park in the city of Nashua is one of the most instantly recognizable and vital parts of the greater metropolis. Located right in the heart of the city, it’s easy to veer off of your path to spend a moment in the quiet, serene bliss. If you can go during fall season, catch the autumn foliage reflecting off of the natural pond waterways.
  2. The 1946 Nashua Dodgers Mural: Especially relevant today is the 1946 Nashua Dodgers Mural, which commemorates baseball players Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe for their roles in integrating the baseball team. The two players were on a mission to integrate the team at a time when such consideration was “risky.” The mural can be seen on the east side of Maynard & Lesieur building at 31 West Hollis Street.
  3. Nashua River Rail Trail: This 12.5-mile paved mixed-use rail trail follows the Nashua River for splendid views and plenty of exercise. You can use it by foot, on bike, with skates, or even on horses. Check out local walking and horseback riding tours.

Additional Mentions:

  • SkyVenture
  • Holman Stadium
  • Pheasant Lane Mall
  • Bobo’s Indoor Playground
  • Boston Billiard Club & Casino

Where To Eat

  1. IncrediBREW: If you want to go to a brewery that also makes its own wine, champagne, and soda, then it’s time to stop by IncrediBREW. Having been opened since 1995, it’s officially the oldest do-it-yourself brewery in the United States. For those looking for a hands-on approach with their happy hour endeavors, check this place out on your next time.
  2. Cedar’s Café: Are you in the mood for something a little more risqué? Then check out the Middle Eastern food at Cedar’s Café, where you can eat falafel wraps, fried chickpeas, tabbouleh, kebabs, and more. The restaurant also is set up for takeout to stay in accordance with COVID-19 mandates.
  3. Fody’s Tavern: As both a food and activity stop, Fody’s Tavern is where you must go to catch some regular entertainment shows, cabaret shows, and stand-up comedy while you enjoy your dinner. Choose between burgers, sandwiches, ribs, etc. while you experience the quintessential charm of an American tavern.

And with that, you’re ready to explore Nashua like a true local! Be sure to make time to sit back and appreciate the beauty of this New England enclave.

A Day in Portsmouth, New Hampshire: What To See, Eat, and Do

Whether you’re looking to get out of Boston for the weekend, you’re road-tripping through the Northeast, or you just want a more intimate look at the state of New Hampshire, Portsmouth is as charming as New England coastal cities can get. As one of New England’s most popular port towns, with interesting shops, great places to eat, and rich history to explore with your family or significant other, it’s no wonder Portsmouth is constantly ranked one of the best travel destinations in the Northeast today.

If you’re ready to see what all of the chatter is about, we’re providing a quick guide to exploring Portsmouth like a pro below:

Where To Go

  1. Strawberry Banke Museum: Just a 10-minute walk from the historic downtown is the Strawberry Banke Museum. The space is a 10-acre outdoor history museum that details the settlement of the town and what life what like for those who lived there.
  2. Inside Out: This cozy gifts, jewelry, and apothecary store in Portsmouth has won attention from travelers near and far thanks to its brick and rustic wood interior. Find fashionable women’s and men’s clothing, as well as craft cocktail tools, homeware, and more. Don’t be afraid to take a moment and snap a photograph while you explore.
  3. Portsmouth Book & Bar: As the name suggests, this is a place you can go and read a book while you enjoy an alcoholic beverage. Whether you want to sip a cocktail or a cup of coffee while you read, Portsmouth Book & Bar permits visitors to choose from the carefully curated selection of books presented by owners John Petrovato and Jon Strymish.

Where To Eat

  1. La Maison Navarre: Start your day off with a breakfast at La Maison Navarre, a charming French Patisserie, Bistro, and Wine Bar located right on Congress Street. The traditional French menu and architecture will make you feel like you’re in Paris – especially as you order the delicious crepes as your meal! Choose between sweet or savory.
  2. The Friendly Toast: Do note: this place is notoriously busy, which is why you will want to try and get there early. The space comes with eclectic décor, retro signs, board games, quirky artwork, and plenty of vegan options if you are not eating meat or dairy. Ask for the perfectly poached eggs if you go for breakfast!
  3. Flatbread Company: Some of the best pizza you will ever eat is not in New York City – rather, it’s at Flatbread Company on Congress Street. Built into a cool industrial space with a tin ceiling, you must stop by for a slice while traveling the area.
  4. Cure: And for dinner, we recommend stopping by Cure, a menu of American comfort food that just warms everyone’s soul. The restaurant name comes from the method for preparing the meats, many of which are slow-cooked to bring out their flavor. All ingredients are fresh and sourced locally, which is why this restaurant frequently wins awards.

If you’re looking to get away, impress a date, solo-travel, or plan a retreat, Portsmouth comes highly recommended. Check out our suggestions today!
